What is RPAA?

The Retail Payment Activities Act (RPAA) is a Canadian federal law that came into effect on 8 September 2025, and requires Etsy to change how we hold and protect your funds.

How are Canadian Sellers Impacted by RPAA?

Etsy is a registered payment service provider under the RPAA. Beginning 8 September 2025, Canadian sellers will be contracted with Etsy Canada Limited (ECL) for holding and disbursing seller funds, and Etsy, Inc. for all other services.

By continuing to sell in Canada on Etsy on or after 8 September 2025, you acknowledge and accept the updated Etsy Payments Policy, which further describes how ECL will hold your funds.

ECL will safeguard your available funds by holding an amount equivalent to your available funds balance in a dedicated trust account on your behalf. This account will be at a financial institution used solely for this purpose. This helps you have reliable access to your funds and helps protect them in the unlikely event that Etsy becomes insolvent. ECL will be responsible for seller disbursements.

Your experience on Etsy will remain the same, as will how and when you receive your funds.

Is any action required by Canadian sellers?

No action is required for Canadian sellers. By continuing to sell in Canada on Etsy on or after 8 September 2025, you acknowledge and accept the updated Etsy Payments Policy, which further describes how ECL will hold your funds.
