Buying and printing an international shipping label is similar to purchasing domestic labels.
Is this my label or my customs form?
It's both! When you print an international shipping label through Etsy, the label you download serves as both your shipping label and customs form.
What shipping options are available?
- USPS First Class International Package Service
- Priority Mail International
- Priority Mail Express International
Is delivery confirmation available?
Delivery Confirmation is included for all Priority Mail International parcels and Priority Mail International Flat Rate services. It is also included for First-Class International Package Service shipments to the following countries:
Australia, Belgium, Brazil*, Canada, Croatia, Denmark*, Estonia, France, Finland, Germany, Gibraltar*, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Hungary, Israel, Italy*, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Luxembourg*, Malaysia, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal*, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey.
*An asterisk indicates that Delivery Confirmation service was temporarily suspended on 12 June 2014.
Note: Date-specific delivery guarantees are not available for Priority Mail Express International postage purchased online.
What additional information do I need to supply?
When purchasing an international label, you must supply the total package weight, as well as enter a customs description that accurately represents all the items in your order.
When you create your label, we will use the information provided to pre-fill your customs form with the item description(s) weight and quantity. Package weights can't be fractional and should be rounded up to the nearest whole number.
You may also enter an optional tariff number along with your customs information. The inclusion of a tariff number may reduce processing times at customs, as duties and taxes will be charged based on the tariff code – thus removing the need for package inspection. Find a Tariff number for your item(s) here.
For more information about tariff numbers, go here.
If your buyer has provided an address that is not in English, please contact them directly for an English translation of their address before purchasing your shipping label.
Keep in mind that international shipping labels have a limited amount of space available for the buyer's address. These character limits are in place to ensure the address fits in the space provided. If the buyer has provided an address that is too long, please contact them directly via Conversations or personal email to see if they can provide a shorter or abbreviated form.
In order to purchase an international shipping label, the address must have a first and last name listed. Otherwise, a package risks being rejected by customs inspectors.
Note: Your phone number will appear on all international shipping labels. We collect this information up front to ensure that it's available when these postage types are selected.
If your order only has one item, we’ll automatically fill out the customs description with that item’s title as long as it is fewer than 50 characters in length. You can edit this by clicking on the field under Customs Description.
If you've set a default customs description, it will appear as the default on all of your labels, regardless of item quantity. You can define up to five items that appear on your customs form. This includes the description, quantity, weight, and monetary value.
All international shipping labels will be sized 4 x 6 inches, regardless of printing method.
The value of your item will be declared on your form. We’ll automatically fill this in based on the order total including any discounts. We do not include shipping or tax charges when calculating the declared value, only the items’ price and quantity.
Depending on the mail class, package type, and destination, you'll print one of two customs forms. The single-page form can be attached to your package in the standard way. The multi-page form must be attached using the official USPS envelope 2976-E.
You can read more about the different customs forms on USPS’s website here: pe.usps.gov/text/imm/immc1_008.htm
Also, you can purchase additional labels for an international order from the order’s receipt page for up to two months after the initial label purchase.
Automated Export System/Internal Transaction Number
When your package's value is equal to or more than $2,500.00 USD, an export license number and additional documentation may be required by the U.S. Census Bureau. This is specified on the customs form as an Automated Export System/Internal Transaction Number (AES/ITN).
For most items with a value under $2,500.00 USD, and for most destination countries, an AES/ITN is not required and an AES Exemption applies. The AES Exemption number will be automatically printed on the customs forms for any postage purchased through Etsy where the value is under $2,500.00 USD.
For packages valued at or over $2,500.00 USD, the AES/ITN/Exemption number will be left blank on any postage purchased through Etsy. In this case, it will be up to you to supply a valid AES/ITN for your package.
