If a buyer in the US wants to return an item, sellers in the US can purchase a USPS postage label for them through Etsy. You can send the return label to the buyer through a Message on Etsy.
If the buyer purchased the order as a guest without an Etsy account, they will need to attach the order to an Etsy account for a return postage label to be sent to them.
To start a return using Etsy return labels:
- On Etsy.com, click Shop Manager.
- Click Orders & Delivery.
- Click the Completed tab.
- Click Create return label under the original postage label number on the order.
- Enter the package details. You’ll see an estimated cost for the postage label, but you won’t be charged until the buyer uses the label.
- Click Create return label.
- Enter a message to send to your buyer along with the return label.
- Click Send.
When you create the label, you’ll see an estimated price based on the details you entered. You’ll be charged for the label once the buyer uses it and it’s scanned by USPS. The final charge is based on the package that USPS dispatches. The charge generally appears in your Payment account a few days after the package is delivered.
What do I do if the buyer doesn’t use the label?
You won’t pay for the cost of the postage label until USPS scans the buyer’s return package.
Do return postage labels include tracking information?
Yes, all USPS return labels purchased through Etsy come with tracking.
Can I purchase insurance for a return postage label?
Insurance is included with Priority Mail postage labels. However, you can’t currently purchase additional insurance for return labels.
Can I cancel or refund a return label?
You’re only charged for a return label when the buyer uses it. If the buyer hasn’t used the label yet, you can ask them to not use it. If the buyer already used the label, you can’t cancel or refund it.
Can I purchase a return label for an order I sold in person or through another platform?
No, return labels are only available for buyers and sellers in the US for items that were sold on Etsy.
Can I purchase a return label for a buyer outside the US?
No, currently return labels are only available for buyers with an address within the 50 United States. US territories and APO/FPO/DPO addresses aren’t eligible. See our Delivery Policy for more info.
