This is a step-by-step guide to listing a digital file. To sell a physical item, please see our article on listing physical items.
Before you can start listing items, you must be registered as a seller.
To begin, sign in to your Etsy account and go to Shop Manager > Listings and click the Add a listing button on the top right.
If you're still setting up your shop, go to Your shop and the Add Listings tab and follow these same instructions.
Step 1: Add photos
Start by adding images to your listing. Click the Add a Photo icon to add files. You can add multiple photos at once.
We recommend that your images be at least 1500 pixels square. You can also upload images in larger sizes as you see fit.
- Your first image becomes your listing's thumbnail in searches, your shop, and elsewhere on the site.
- To change the order of an image, click on a thumbnail and drag it to the left or right.
- To remove an image, click the X at the bottom right of the thumbnail.
- We recommend you use at least five images to help shoppers get a better feel for your item.
- If you’d like to crop the full-size image that appears on your public listing page, you can do so by clicking the pencil icon under your photo.
Step 2: Adjust your thumbnail
Your thumbnail photo is the photo that buyers see in your shop home, in Search results, and in various other places on Etsy.
To adjust this image to your liking, click Adjust Thumbnail below your primary photo. You have the option to magnify the image and manipulate its position within the square.
Once you're happy with the adjustments, click Save.
Step 3: Complete your listing details
Give your item a descriptive title. What would buyers search for to find your item? Add the most searchable words at the front of your title. Titles have a 140 character limit. Learn more about item titles.
About this Listing
The first dropdown menu next to About this Listing determines whether your item belongs under Handmade, Vintage, or Craft Supplies.
The dropdown menus next to Category places your item within a category and up to two subcategories on the Categories page.
Once you add categories to your item, you’ll have the option to add category-specific attributes to your items.
After you've chosen categories for your item, you can add category-specific attributes.
Attributes allow you to include standardized information about your items. Adding attributes will help make your items more relevant in search results. They’ll also help buyers find your items more easily. Check out this Help article for more information on attributes.
Once published, listings stay on the site for 4 months. Your listings will renew automatically to keep them from expiring, unless you opt to renew your listings manually (which you can do anytime before or after a listing expires) during the listing process.
If you charge sales tax in your shop, you can choose whether to charge it on this specific item next. Learn more about tax settings.
Mark the button for Digital file. If you’re listing a physical item, please refer instead to our article on listing physical items.
Include the size or scale of your item, its file type, file contents (for .zip files), and any unique features or special instructions. If your file requires a specific program to use, mention it here. Learn more here about writing enticing item descriptions.
If you have sections for different types of items in your shop, add the listing directly to one of your sections. Learn more about creating sections.
Titles and tags help shoppers find your item when they search on Etsy. Use all 13 tags available to you.
Some things to consider when tagging your listing:
- Your item's size or scale
- What it's used for
- Color, style, file type, content, and motifs

In the coming weeks, the option to add materials will be changing.
For some categories, using item attributes will be the best way to add materials to your listings.

Step 4: Complete your inventory and pricing
Enter the price of your item. Learn more about setting your preferred currency.
If you’re selling multiple copies of your digital item, you can increase its quantity. As it sells, the quantity in stock will go down.
- The listing fee is $0.20 USD, regardless of how much quantity you list.
- When the item sells, you will be charged a $0.20 USD auto-renewal fee for any remaining quantities. This will also bring the item back to the front of your shop.
- Once a listing’s quantities have sold out, you have to renew it to return it to your shop.
SKU stands for stock keeping unit. If you use a SKU system to track your inventory, enter your item’s SKU number here.

Step 5: Add files
You can upload up to five digital files. The maximum size for each file is 20MB. We currently support the following file types:
If you add a note for buyers, the note will apply to all digital listings purchased from your shop. After a purchase, a buyer can see it on their Downloads page.
Uploaded files will appear in a list with their names, file sizes, and upload dates. The file names you see will be the same ones your buyers see. We don't have a way of editing the name after uploading, so be sure to name your files appropriately first.
File names are limited to 70 alphanumeric characters, periods, underscores, or hyphens.
If you change your mind and want to remove a file, click the X next to its listing time/date.
Step 6: Publish your listing
Click Preview to see how your listing will look to shoppers. Note this step is optional.
You're ready to sell! Click Publish to finish your listing. The $0.20 USD listing fee will be added to your Payment account.
Need to fix something? No problem! Click Continue Editing to go back and make changes. Note though that your listing won't be saved until you click Save as Draft or Publish.
Save as Draft
Not ready to go live but want to save what you've done? This saves your listing, and you can find it later by going to Shop Manager > Listings and clicking Drafts.
Drafts never expire, and there is no limit on the number of drafts you can have. You aren't charged the listing fee until you publish it.
To save as a draft, you'll need to add at least one photo, a category, a price, a description, and a file. You can always enter temporary info and then replace it before you publish.
Step 7: Your listing is now live!
This listing is now available to shoppers. Tell potential buyers about your new item and share it on Facebook or Twitter.
Note: Although it usually happens within a few minutes, it may take up to 24 hours for listings to be indexed into Search results and categories.
