How to Be an Etsy Team Captain

Etsy Teams are a community feature on Etsy where sellers can connect with one another.

Every team on Etsy has a captain. There are two ways to become a team captain:

  • If you're a member of a team that already has a captain, the current captain can decide to transfer responsibilities to a new captain.

Team captains can edit the team when you first create it or after it's already set up. Team captains can:

  • Choose the team name
  • Write the description
  • Select the group privacy setting
  • Upload a team logo
  • Manage membership to your team
  • Moderate the team discussion forum
  • Appoint other leaders to help run the team
  • Send Team messages
  • Pin threads to the top of the team board
  • Create Team announcements

How to manage your team

How to change your team's privacy setting

You can choose if people can freely join your team, or if you can approve membership. To change your team’s privacy setting:

  1. Go to your team’s page on Etsy—you will see your team in the ‘Your Teams’ section of the main Community page or the main Teams page
  2. Click Options, found on the right hand side of your team’s page, under your team logo
  3. Click Edit Team
  4. Scroll until you see Team privacy
  5. Select Open or Closed, depending on your preference
  6. Click Save at the bottom of the page

If your team’s membership style is closed, members may only join if you or your leaders approve them.

How to manage membership

To invite members to your team:

  1. Go to your team’s page on Etsy—you will see your team in the ‘Your Teams’ section of the main Community page or the main Teams page
  2. Click Options, found on the right hand side of your team’s page, under your team logo
  3. Click Invite members
  4. In the Send to area, start typing the username of the Etsy seller you want to invite
  5. Once you have selected the person or persons you want to invite, select the type of member you want to invite them to become
  6. Include an optional message if you want
  7. Click Send Invitation

You can accept or deny member requests if your team's membership style is closed. To accept or deny member requests:

  1. Go to your team’s page on Etsy—you will see your team in the ‘Your Teams’ section of the main Community page or the main Teams page
  2. Click View all, found on the right hand side of your team’s page, in the Team members box
  3. Click Requests
  4. Review the member requests, and click whether you want to accept or deny each member by choosing the option to the right of their name
  5. Confirm your selection

To remove a Team member:

  1. Go to your team’s page on Etsy—you will see your team in the ‘Your Teams’ section of the main Community page or the main Teams page
  2. Click View all, found on the right hand side of your team’s page, in the Team members box
  3. Find the member you want to remove
  4. Click Remove, to the right of their name
  5. Select Confirm

Team Captains can appoint members of their team as Team Leaders. To do so:

  1. Go to your team’s page on Etsy—you will see your team in the ‘Your Teams’ section of the main Community page or the main Teams page
  2. Click View all, found on the right hand side of your team’s page, in the Team members box
  3. Next to the name of member you want to make a leader, click Edit.
  4. Click Team Admin.
  5. Click Save.

To make someone else the Team Captain:

  1. Go to your team’s page on Etsy—you will see your team in the ‘Your Teams’ section of the main Community page or the main Teams page
  2. Click View all, found on the right hand side of your team’s page, in the Team members box
  3. Next to the name of member you want to make Captain, click Edit.
  4. Click Team Captain.
  5. Click Save.

When you make someone else a Team Captain, you will no longer be the captain, and the new captain will take control immediately. You will remain a Team Leader.

Team discussion forums are moderated by the team's leadership, not by Etsy, so it is up to the captain to look over forum activity and respond to issues as quickly as possible. Review the Team Forum Moderation Guidelines for tips and best practices.

How to change your Team name

You can edit your Team name to whatever you would like, as long as it abides by Etsy's policies. Editing the name will change the URL (web address) of your team's page, but don't worry, the old URL will forward to the new one.

To change your Team name:

  1. Go to your team’s page on Etsy—you will see your team in the ‘Your Teams’ section of the main Community page or the main Teams page
  2. Click Options, found on the right hand side of your team’s page, under your team logo
  3. Click Edit Team
  4. Enter your new Team name
  5. Click Save at the bottom of the page

How to delete your Team

If you no longer want to use your team, the captain can delete a team. However, instead of deleting your team you may want to pass the role of captain on to another member.

To delete your team:

  1. Go to your team’s page on Etsy—you will see your team in the ‘Your Teams’ section of the main Community page or the main Teams page
  2. Click Options, found on the right hand side of your team’s page, under your team logo
  3. Click Delete Team.
  4. Confirm that you want to delete the team.

To do this, click ‘View All’ inside of the Members module of the home page of your team. Find the person you want to make captain and click ‘Edit’ next to their name.

Messaging members

As a Team Captain, you’ll see the option to message your team members via a button on the right side of your group.

Maybe you're trying to notify your team about an important discussion. Or you could just be posting details about an upcoming event. Whatever it may be, sending a message is a great way to make sure everyone's informed.

Messages will appear in each member’s community messages inbox within the Etsy Community. To keep these messages useful, we recommend sending them sparingly.

Why is a member not getting my messages?

Members of your team can unsubscribe from receiving these messages.

Announcements

Team Captains and leaders can post an announcement in your team. Use this space to call out important information, alert members about upcoming events, or ask your members to take a specific action.

Announcement will appear to all members of your team when they visit the team page.

Pinned threads

Team Captains and leaders can pin threads in your team forum so that they appear at the top of the page. This is a great way to draw your member’s attention to conversations you want them to participate in the most.

Tips for Team Captains

  • Stay on top of your team's activity and be prepared to step in and mediate, should disputes arise.
  • Delegate tasks to other leaders.
  • Set an example for your members.
  • Be aware that your responsibility as a captain is a reflection of the larger Etsy community.
