Some postage purchased on Etsy comes with insurance included.
For US domestic orders, USPS Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express both come with up to $100 of insurance automatically at no additional cost to you.
For international orders, USPS Priority Mail International and Priority Mail Express International come with up to $200 of insurance automatically at no additional cost to you.
Claims for the insurance included with these classes of mail must be filed through the USPS website, here. (Note: You must create an account with the USPS online if you do not already have one.)
For packages lost in the mail, you must wait 7 days before filing a claim. Claims for damages may be filed once the package bears a "Delivered" tracking event.
When filing a claim with USPS, the damaged article, container, packaging, and any other items received must be presented to the Postal Service for inspection.
Shipsurance insurance coverage
If your parcel does not come with insurance coverage, or if you need to ensure the parcel for more than what is automatically included, we offer sellers the option to purchase insurance coverage for up to $5,000 USD. Purchased insurance on Etsy is provided by Shipsurance Insurance Services, Inc.
Note: If you're adding insurance to a parcel that comes with insurance automatically, please purchase insurance for the total value of the parcel.
What are the rates?
For US domestic shipments and APO/FPO/DPO military addresses, rates per package are:
- $0.80 per $100 of order value
- $0.80 for each additional $100 or a fraction thereof over $100 of coverage
For international shipments, rates are $1.35 per $100 of coverage, per package.
Where do I buy it?
The option to include insurance is located just above the signature confirmation checkbox on your label purchase page.
Note: Make sure to include both the cost of postage and the value of the package contents in the total insured value.
The cost of your insurance, as well as any additional shipping fees, are included in the itemized list on your label purchase page. After purchasing insurance for a label, the cost of insurance will appear separately on your Etsy bill as "Shipsurance Parcel Insurance," and will include the shipping label number.
File Shipsurance Parcel Insurance Claim for USPS Shipping Labels
Where do I start?
Filing a claim for insurance purchased with your Etsy Shipping Label begins on Etsy. Afterward, the process is handled entirely by Shipsurance.
If you need to cancel the order, file your claim before doing so. You won't be able to file a claim after the order is canceled.
You can start the process by going to Shop Manager > Orders & Shipping > Get shipping labels > Purchased Labels, then choosing the appropriate carrier at the top. From there:
- Find the label you've insured
- Click the gear icon to the right
- Select File Insurance Claim
Add your claim amount and specify the reason for the claim, whether the package was damaged, lost, or if items were missing.
For damaged claims, provide a detailed description of the damage. If the item can be repaired, indicate the cost of repair. If it's not repairable, enter the recoverable amount. This is whatever value the item still has.
Hold onto the damaged property until the claim is resolved, or your claim will be denied.
When you're ready to proceed, click File Insurance Claim. Your claim will be submitted to Shipsurance. The rest of the process is handled entirely by Shipsurance Insurance Services who may request some additional documents during this process.
You may check on the status of your claim at any time by going to: http://shipclaim.com/etsy-claim-status
How long do I need to wait before filing a claim?
For lost parcels, you must wait 20 days for domestic and 40 days for international locations.
How long do I have to file a claim?
Claims must be filed no later than 120 days from the shipment date.
When is a claim processed, who is paid, the Etsy seller or buyer?
As the seller is the insured, a check is mailed to the seller.
