Pricing Transparency in the UK Under the DMCC Act

The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCC Act) aims to strengthen consumer protection and promote fair competition in the United Kingdom. Under guidance from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, the Act requires businesses clearly show the total price a customer in the UK must pay upfront, throughout the purchase journey. This requirement means mandatory costs, such as shipping or other required fees can’t be introduced later in the purchase process.

How does the DMCC Act impact UK buyers?

The DMCC Act requires businesses to clearly show the total price a customer must pay upfront. This means mandatory costs, such as shipping or other required fees, shouldn’t be separated or introduced later in the purchase process.

To help Etsy sellers comply with the DMCC Act, and to provide greater price transparency to buyers, Etsy displays a combined total price that includes the item price and VAT-inclusive shipping price to UK buyers. This helps ensure they don’t encounter unexpected, non-optional charges once they reach checkout.  When viewing a listing, you’ll see the total price displayed, along with a breakdown of the item price and shipping price. Occasionally, the total may update if delivery details change or if items qualify for combined shipping. If this happens, Etsy will show the updated final price before you complete your purchase.

Does this affect sales, offers, and free shipping?

  • Sales: Any active sales are already reflected in the prices you see.
  • Offers: Offers sent by sellers are usually applied in your cart and at checkout.
  • Free shipping: Free shipping, whether offered by the seller or earned by meeting a minimum order amount, will be clearly labeled on listings.

How does the DMCC Act impact sellers who sell to the UK?

To comply with the DMCC Act, Etsy displays the total price of an item, including shipping, to UK buyers. While this may make your listing’s price appear higher at first glance, the total amount the buyer pays hasn’t changed. Showing the total upfront helps create a clearer and more transparent shopping experience.
