How much should I charge for shipping?

If you're based in the US or Canada, you may have USPS or Canada Post shipping rates automatically calculated for your orders by using calculated shipping. With calculated shipping, costs are determined based on the total weight and dimensions of an order, the buyer's address, and the shipping service that the buyer selects during Checkout.

Each seller determines their own shipping rates.

You can only enter one "One item" and "Additional item" rate for each country.

We understand that rates can vary due to weight and distance. If you're concerned about this, we recommend you charge a higher estimate while explaining in your listing descriptions that you'll refund any extra postage. You can then refund the buyer via the method they paid. You may also want to figure an average, so you may lose money on some shipments but gain it back on others.

You're also welcome to note that shipping prices vary in your listing descriptions. Ask buyers to contact you prior to purchasing for a more exact shipping quote. Then you can edit the listing's shipping rate and reserve the listing for your buyer. Learn how to reserve a listing.

How do I set shipping information on my listings?

When listing a new item:

  1. In the Shipping area select an existing shipping profile in Shipping options, or select Enter custom shipping options to set up shipping settings specific to this listing.
  2. Under Shipping prices, select I’ll enter fixed prices manually.
  3. Add information to the Country of origin, Origin postal code, and Processing time fields.

In the Standard shipping section, you will set which countries you’ll ship to (domestic shipping is required by default). Everywhere Else allows you to create a flat-rate price for shipping to everywhere in the world.

  • If it costs more or less to ship to specific countries (like the country where you are located), then you can set that price individually. All countries that you don't set up specifically will fall under "Everywhere Else."
  • You can also select the European Union or Europe non-EU. If you set a shipping cost for a specific country within those regions, that cost will override the cost set for the region.

If you plan to ship worldwide without exception, select Everywhere else in addition to your own country, or select Add another location and specify the countries you’d like to ship to. To remove a country, select the trashcan icon to the right of the country name. Some buyers only view items on Etsy that ship to their country. To make sure you appear in international searches, be sure to set rates for every country you feel comfortable shipping to.

For each location, specify the Shipping service you will be using, and under What you’ll charge, select either Fixed prices or Free shipping.

If you choose Fixed prices, you’ll need to set a One item price and an Additional item price.

How do I create a shipping profile?

With saved shipping profiles, you can update multiple listings quickly with similar shipping settings. To learn more about shipping profiles and other shipping tools on Etsy, read the Beginners Guide to Shipping.

If you make a change to a profile, all of your listings connected to that profile will be updated as well. If you’re a seller in the US or Canada and would like to have shipping costs automatically calculated for you, use calculated shipping.

To create a shipping profile:

  1. On Etsy.com, select Shop Manager.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Shipping settings.
  4. Select Shipping profiles.
  5. Select Add a shipping profile.
  6. Fill out the required shipping details. You also have the option to set separate domestic and international handling fees.
  7. If youre entering fixed costs manually, you can add shipping upgrades. Learn more about shipping upgrades.
  8. If you're adding calculated shipping, item weight and size are required.
  9. Select Save.

Once you create and save a shipping profile, it can be applied to any future listings you add to your shop.

  5. Select Change shipping profiles from the dropdown menu.
  6. In the next window, select the Select profile… dropdown menu and choose a shipping profile.
  7. Select Apply to save your changes.

Offering free shipping with shipping profiles

You have the option to include free shipping for new and existing shipping profiles. You can set up free shipping by editing a shipping profile from your shipping settings.

If you use calculated shipping, scroll down to the Free shipping section of a shipping profile. Specify whether you'd like to offer domestic or international free shipping by checking the appropriate boxes.

For fixed shipping profiles, select Free shipping from the What you’ll charge dropdown.

How does discounted shipping work for multiple items?

Combined shipping costs give buyers a shipping discount for ordering multiple items from your shop.

If an order has listings with a mixture of calculated and manually-set costs, we first calculate costs for the listings using calculated shipping. We'll then add the "additional item" cost to the remaining listings to determine the order's shipping total.

It isn't possible to set discounted rates for listings with calculated shipping.

When listing an item in your shop, you must enter One item and Additional item prices.

One item price: This is the cost of shipping the item alone.

Additional item price: This is the additional cost of shipping another purchased item.

The additional item price applies when a buyer purchases multiple, different listings within your shop at the same time. This also applies when multiple quantities of the same item are purchased.

  • When creating a listing, enter the secondary price in the Additional item field. If you want to offer shipping discounts for purchasing multiple items, this price should be lower than the One item price. See examples below.

  • If you don't want to offer a discounted combined shipping rate, just enter the same amount for the primary and secondary shipping prices.

  • If you want additional items to ship at no extra charge, enter $0.00 as the secondary shipping price.

Item A:

  • Primary shipping cost (One item) = $2.00
  • Secondary shipping cost (Each additional item) = $0.50

Item B:

  • Primary shipping cost = $1.00
  • Secondary shipping cost = $0.75

If Item A and Item B are purchased together, the total combined shipping cost would equal the greater primary shipping cost of the two items (Item A: $2.00), plus the secondary shipping cost of the remaining item(s) (Item B: $0.75).

If three of Item A are purchased together, the total combined shipping cost to the buyer would equal the primary shipping cost for the first item ($2.00), plus $.50 each for the two additional items. The total combined shipping cost to the buyer in this situation would be $3.00.

How much are buyers charged for shipping upgrades?

When adding shipping upgrades, you can enter either a Domestic upgrade, an International upgrade, or both. The price of the upgrades is completely up to you and can be as little as $0.

The cost you set for a shipping upgrade is added to the base shipping cost you set. Your buyer will see the total of both amounts along with the name of your upgrade in their cart.

In an order for multiple items, if a shipping upgrade is available on one item, it will be available for the buyer to select. Its costs will apply to every item in the order, even those items whose shipping profiles don't offer the upgrade.

Your location and the shipping address for the buyer determine the cost of shipping for you. The shipping price the buyer sees is based on the settings in your shipping profile.

On Etsy, you can offer fixed-price shipping, or calculated shipping if you purchase USPS or Canada Post shipping labels through Etsy.

Here are the solutions to some common issues with shipping prices, costs, and profiles:

The order contains multiple items

There are a few reasons that an order with multiple items may have incorrect shipping costs:

  • The combined dimensions of the items in the order may not fit into your chosen package preferences. Calculated shipping splits the order into multiple packages unless all items can fit into one package, which can increase shipping cost. You can reduce item dimensions so that the correct number fits into your available packages, or find a package that works for this order.
  • The items may have different shipping origin postal codes. Check the shipping profiles of all listings in the order and update any with an incorrect origin postal code.
  • The order may combine items with calculated shipping and fixed-cost shipping. In this scenario, we determine the shipping cost for all calculated items, and add the “Additional item” costs for all fixed-cost items, regardless of what the costs are. To fix this, you can either use calculated shipping for all listings, or change the “Additional item” price for your fix-cost listings.
  • Handling fees are charged per item, so a larger order may have several handling fees being added to the calculated shipping cost. Consider using package fees instead.

The order only contains one item

There are a few reasons that an order with only one item may have incorrect shipping costs:

  • You may want to change your shipping rate type. If you use USPS calculated shipping, you have the option to charge the Etsy Shipping Label rate or the USPS retail rate. If you use Etsy’s labels, you likely want to use the Etsy Shipping Label rate. If you go in person to the post office, you’ll likely want USPS retail rates. You can edit your shipping rate type from the Rates & upgrades tab.
  • You may have an old origin postal code set for the shipping profile for this item. Check and update the origin postal code in the listing’s calculated shipping profile.

The order has multiple items

If the shipping price for an order with multiple items is too high or too low, it may be because of the shipping price for an additional item.

On a fixed-cost shipping profile, you can set the price of shipping an additional item that uses that same profile. If you'd like to offer a discount for shipping additional items, you'll want to include an "Additional item" shipping cost that's lower than the item's "One item" shipping cost.

If an item(s) in this order has a different shipping profile or no profile, the highest "One item" shipping cost of all the items is charged, then the "Additional item" cost for each additional item in the order is added to that.

To check that all listings use the same shipping profile:

  1. From your Listings page, select More filters
  2. Select the shipping profile you want to see, or listing that don't have a profile associated with them ("No Shipping Profile").

The order has a shipping upgrade

Fixed-cost shipping upgrades add to the base shipping cost, rather than replace it. For example, a base shipping cost of $5 with an upgrade cost of $10 will charge the buyer $15 total for shipping.

Variations don’t have separate shipping costs. If you have a listing that varies greatly in size or weight, the best way to reflect accurate shipping costs is to list each variation in a different listing.

There are a few reasons you may not be able to use calculated shipping:

  • Currently, only sellers who use USPS or Canada Post to send orders can use calculated shipping. If you’re in a different country, can’t use these carriers, or ship your items as letter mail or freight, you’ll need to set fixed-cost shipping rates
  • Calculated shipping is not available yet on the Android version of Sell on Etsy. If you use the Sell on Etsy app on an Android phone or tablet, you’ll need to use Etsy.com to set up or edit calculated shipping settings.
  • Calculated shipping can’t be used on private, custom listings.

If none of these apply, click I still need help and Etsy Support can look into your issue.

If you received an order from a location you don’t ship to you have a few options. You can choose to:

Why did I receive an order from a location I don’t ship to?

This can mean that an international shipping destination was enabled by mistake. If a listing or shipping profile shows that it ships to the destination “Everywhere Else”, the listing ships worldwide.

You can remove “Everywhere else” by clicking the trash can icon on its right side in the listing’s Shipping section or on the shipping profile

This issue is often related to some listings not using a shipping profile. You can check for listings without shipping profiles from your Listings:

  1. On your Listings page, select More filters
  2. In the Shipping profiles filter, select No Shipping Profile
  3. Select the checkbox on these listings.
  4. Select Editing options.
  5. Select Change shipping profile.
  6. Choose the shipping profile you want to apply to these listings.
  7. Select Apply.

Each listing can have only one shipping origin. If you fulfill orders using multiple different distribution centers, your options are separate listings, or separate shops.

There are a few reasons why your processing time or ship-by date might seem incorrect:

  • Processing times are in business days (Monday through Friday). Orders on Saturday and Sunday are considered Friday orders, in terms of their processing times.
  • Processing times can appear incorrect due to differences in the seller’s, buyer’s, and Etsy’s time zones.

If your shipping deadline is off by a day, these reasons are the most likely causes. If it’s more than a day, it may be a technical issue. Select I still need help and include an example order number to investigate further.
