How to Make Your Account More Secure

Create a password that is easy to remember but hard for someone else to guess.

To help you create a secure password, we outlined password best practices:

Don't use
  Your username
A previous password or password on another site
Consecutive keyboard combinations such as "qwerty" or "asdfg"
A complete dictionary word or obvious combinations of dictionary words
Slang terms, common misspellings, or words spelled backward
Names such as your company name or names of spouses, kids, other relatives, or pets
Personal information such as your age or birth date

Do use
At least eight characters, but the longer the better
A mix of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols

Optional security features

Etsy provides additional levels of protection for your account.

To access your security settings, sign in and go to Your Account > Account Settings > Security.

Two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication adds a extra layer of protection to your account. When you sign in to Etsy.com with two-factor authentication enabled, you’ll need to enter your password and a confirmation code that's sent to your phone or tablet.

You can connect an authenticator app or enter a phone number to receive calls or texts. You can use the same app or phone number on multiple accounts.

You can choose to receive your confirmation code via:

  • Authenticator app
  • Text message
  • Voice call

You’ll be prompted to provide the code:

  • When you sign in using a different browser or on a new device
  • Every 30 days

You’ll need to enter that code in addition to your password when signing in.

Authenticator app

To set up two-factor authentication:

  1. Download an authenticator app on your phone or tablet. We recommend using Google Authenticator, which you can download from the App Store or the Google Play Store.
  2. In your web browser, go to Etsy.com > Your Account > Account Settings > Security.
  3. Toggle Authenticator App.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Open your Authenticator App and follow the instructions in the app to add a new account.
  6. Scan the QR code using your authenticator app.
  7. Enter the code from your authenticator app into the textbox under the QR code.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Save the backup codes provided in a safe place. You can use these if you ever lose your phone.
  10. Click Close.

When you sign in to Etsy, you may be prompted for your confirmation code. Open your authenticator app to locate the code.

Backup codes

With two-factor authentication, you can download backup codes to use when you don't have your phone to sign in. Save these codes in a safe place. You can only use each code once.

If you lose your codes or use them all:

  1. Go to Etsy.com > Your Account > Account Settings > Security.
  2. Click Regenerate next to Backup Codes.
  3. Download and save your new codes.

Text or call authentication

The number you’ll be contacted from is an automated service and is not an Etsy Support contact number.

Standard rates apply and depend on your service provider.

Sign in notifications

If Etsy detects that someone accesses your account from a new browser or device, you will receive an email notification. You have the option to add them as trusted devices.

Note: We keep track of you signing in with cookies. That means if your browser isn't set to maintain cookies from Etsy, you'll keep getting notifications for your own sign-ins.

If you have an older Etsy account, you may need to enable these notifications in your security settings. Sign in and go to Your Account > Account Settings > Security. Then click the Enable icon next to Sign In Notifications.

Sign in history

Sign in notifications history shows you when and where you sign in to your Etsy account. Once you turn it on, you'll start to see your sign in history for up to 10 of your most recent sign-ins.

You can also sign out of any open sessions. If you signed in to Etsy on a public computer and forgot to sign out, you can sign out of that session in your sign in history.
